Today I bring you Sierra’s favorite story, my retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. It’s fun to mime gestures for this one and to use different voices for the Papa Bear, the Mama Bear, and the wee little Baby Bear. And at the end of the story when Goldilocks jumps out of bed, runs through Papa Bear’s legs, and then all the way home, I jump up and run also! And then the children jump and run with me! It’s fun, I promise.
Once upon a time there were three bears who lived in a beautiful cottage in the woods. There was a great big Papa bear, a medium size Mama bear, and a wee little Baby bear. One morning they made porridge for breakfast, but it was too hot to eat. So they decided to take a stroll in the woods while it cooled down.
On the other side of the woods lived a little girl. She had golden curly hair, so everybody called her Goldilocks. She was a very curious girl and she loved to go exploring in the woods around her house. One day she walked very far, farther than she had ever gone, deep into the woods. Goldilocks came upon the beautiful cottage and she was curious. Who lived there? She knocked on the door but nobody answered. She peeked into the window and nobody was there. But on the table she saw three steaming bowls of porridge, a great big bowl, a medium size bowl, and wee little bowl. Goldilocks was curious about this house and that porridge, so she tried the door and it swung wide open! The porridge smelled delicious and Goldilocks was so very hungry from her long walk that she decided to try just a little bite.
First she tasted the porridge in the great big bowl. Too salty! Then she tasted the porridge in the medium size bowl. Too sweet! Finally she tasted the porridge in the wee little bowl and it was just right. Goldilocks was so hungry she ate it all up!
Goldilocks was tired from her long walk and she decided to sit down. There were three chairs, a great big chair, a medium size chair, and a wee little chair. First she tried the great big chair, but it was too hard and uncomfortable. Then she tried the medium size chair, but it was too soft and lumpy. Finally she tried the wee little chair and it was just right! But….crash clank bang boom! The chair broke all to pieces and Goldilocks fell to the floor and bumped her head!
“Oh,” said Goldilocks, “I don’t feel so well. I need to lie down.” So she went in the bedroom and saw three beds, a great big bed, a medium size bed, and a wee little bed. First she tried the great big bed, but it was too hard and uncomfortable. Then she tried the medium size bed but it was too soft and lumpy. Finally she tried the wee little bed and it was just right! Goldilocks was so comfortable in the bed and so tired from her walk that she fell fast asleep!
And while she was sleeping, what do you suppose? The bears came home! Papa bear said, “Somebody’s been eating my porridge.” Mama bear said, “Somebody’s been eating my porridge.” And wee little Baby bear said, “Somebody’s been eating my porridge, and now it’s all gone! Waaah!!!”
Papa bear said, “Somebody’s been sitting in my chair.” Mama bear said, “Somebody’s been sitting in my chair.” And wee little Baby bear said, “Somebody’s been sitting in my chair and it’s broken all to pieces! Waaah!!!”
They noticed the bedroom door was open so they went to look in. Papa bear said, “Somebody’s been sleeping in my bed.” Mama bear said, “Somebody’s been sleeping in my bed.” And wee little Baby bear said, “Somebody’s been sleeping in my bed! And look! There she is!”
When Goldilocks heard the bear’s voices she awoke with a start. She was so surprised to see three bears standing in front of her that she squealed and jumped out of bed! She ran under Papa bear’s legs and ran out the door and all the way home! And she never went back there again!
